This piece was originally driven by “the Rainmaster” – Rudolf Caracciola. A Mercedes-Benz racing driver legend, Caracciola was also the first foreign starter to win the Mille Miglia in 1931, driving a 27/240/300 hp SSKL. In 1934, he was signed on again by Daimler-Benz, this time seated behind the very first Silver Arrow, the W25, built according to the 750-kg formula. Since that date, these cars along with those produced by Auto Union regularly dominated the championships. The W25 went on to win eleven Grand Prix victories, the Rainmaster taking world champion title in Tripoli 1935. Now 2012, Austrian born Formula Once driver Karl Wendlinger sits behind the W25 at Goodwood Revival, alongside the contemporary legends Jochen Mass, Sir Jackie Stewart, and Bernd Schneider, each behind the wheel of a Silver Arrow.
